New Abu Qir Thermal Power Plant 2 x 650 MW

Project Overview:

The New Abu Qir Thermal Power Plant project involved expanding the capacity of the existing Abu Qir Power Plant. Situated on the Mediterranean coast, 20 km east of Alexandria and to the east of the existing Abu Qir Power Plant, this facility is designed to enhance Egypt’s electricity supply capacity. The plant comprises two identical steam turbine generating units, each with a capacity of 650 MW, utilizing thermal power generation technology. While the main fuel is natural gas, the plant was also designed to run on heavy fuel (mazut) oil as a backup fuel.

The objective of this project was to increase the generation capacity of the Unified Power System (UPS) by about 4% in the year 2012, to meet the electricity demand on the UPS in the short-to-medium term. The project contributes to making available sufficient and reliable power to various consumers, including households, agriculture, businesses, and industries.

Key Components:

The New Abu Qir Thermal Power Plant includes the following key components:

  • Steam Turbine Generating Units: Two identical units, each producing 650 MW of power.
  • Steam Generators: Boilers producing high-pressure steam to drive the turbines.
  • Turbine Building: Housing the steam turbines and associated equipment.
  • Boiler Building: Housing the steam generators.
  • Control Room: Centralized facility for monitoring and controlling plant operations.
  • Cooling System: A system utilizing water from the Mediterranean Sea for cooling purposes.
  • Electrical Systems: Equipment for power transmission and distribution.

ECPC’s Scope of Work:

ECPC played a vital role in the construction of the New Abu Qir Power Plant’s cooling infrastructure, in the development of the circulating water pipe-lines.

ECPC designed and supplied approximately 5,360 meters of Reinforced Concrete Cylinder Pipes (RCCP) and special fittings for the circulating water piping system, which included intake, discharge, and near shore lines.

This involved supplying large-diameter pipes of various sizes: 1,300mm, 1,800mm, 2,500mm, and 3,500mm, consisting of a total of 1,542 pipes and more than 252 special fittings.

ECPC collaborated with the following contractors:

  • Arab Contractors: Supplied 3,790 meters of RCCP and special fittings, consisting of 1,082 pipes and 110 special fittings with diameters of 1,300 mm, 2,500mm, and 3,500mm.
  • Orascom Construction: Supplied 1,570 meters of RCCP and special fittings, consisting of 460 pipes and 142 special fittings with diameters of 1,800 mm, 2,500mm, and 3,500mm.
